How to Style Your Bedroom Like an Interior stylist

Have you ever been to a hotel and wished that your bedroom could be as elegant, clean, and comfortable? Well, it’s a lot easier to replicate those five-star hotel room feelings in your own bedroom than you think. And you don’t need to have any experience in interior design to get you there.

With the right thematic colours, complimentary bed and bedside tables, and a knack for mix-and-matching, you can transform your gloomy room into a relaxing oasis!

We’ve put together some tips and insights that will make creating your ideal bedroom easy. So, keep reading, so you can get started!

1. Pick a calming colour palette

A bedroom ought to be a sanctuary-like place where we can nestle in and relax. A comfortable bed with plush pillows will of course help this cause, but just as important as the soft and warm mattress and bedding, is the colour palette of the bedroom. This a big factor that can completely transform the look and feel of your bedroom space.

For a clean and elegant look, neutral colour schemes and monochromatic palettes are highly recommended. The soothing effect of the pastel shades and soft whites instantly adds calm to the room and makes it a sleep-friendly environment. Other gentle hues of grey, blue or brown are great options for your sleep sanctuary.

While these colours have a serene and tranquil quality, it is still your personal space. So, if you want to go bold, no problem! Play with colourful patterns and style your room to your liking.

2. Your bed is the star of the show

There’s no denying that your bed is the most important element in your room. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be called a bedroom.

Your bed is the focal point that helps to set the ultimate tone of the room. Often it will create an aesthetic theme that the other essentials of your room, like bedside tables, cabinets, wall fixtures and other accessories will work with.

Bedframes with clean cut and minimalistic lines created with high quality materials like European oak, FSC-approved recycled teak and American walnut have a timeless feel that makes them stand out yet also blend in with any style home and bedroom.

At SLH we specialise in using these materials to create our bedframes, and many of our other pieces, because not only are they sustainably sourced and help us to reduce our environmental footprint, but each piece is unique. Markings, both natural and from the materials previous life gives each piece its own personal feel.

When shopping for your bed, make sure that you choose a bedframe that is right size for you to sleep on comfortably, and the right size for your room. Depending on how large your room is, and how many the bed must accommodate, your size options can vary from single to double beds, queen size, and king size beds.

Not only does the bed need to look good, but it also needs to be cozy and sleep friendly. You’re going to spend a lot of time in there after all. Pick bedding, pillows and cushions made with high quality materials. Linen, cotton and bambo materials are all very sleep friendly and their beautiful textures both look good and feel good.

Work with your colour palette for your bedding and pillows. And consider using the cushions as a way to accent, add depth and play around with your colour palette.

3. Create harmony with your bed and bedside tables

For every Batman, there’s a Robin. It’s not the most appropriate comparison, but you get the point. Although your bed is certainly the star of the show, a complimentary bedside table will not only make your bed look better, but it will help to tie your bedroom’s theme together. That’s not to say it has to match the materials or even colour of your bedframe, it’s just something to consider.

A bedside table is a vital piece of furniture and needs to be versatile, serving both an aesthetic and practical purpose. A bedside table must be durable so they will be long-lasting. But they need to be very functional. This is where your lamps, books, alarm clocks, glasses, and other essentials are kept, and they need to be easily accessible.

Bedside tables also allow you to experiment because there are many different types out there. Depending on how much space you have and the space you need for your essentials, the option you choose could be any of the following:

Traditional and simple bedsides these are designed to accommodate a few items like lamps or small houseplants. Sometimes, they are simple tables where on the top is used for your items. This style is great to help you avoid putting too much on your bedside table. Other styles come with additional compartments or spaces for a little more storage. They are great for small rooms because they occupy less space.

Bedside drawers these are also a classic type where you can use the top for lamps or alarm clocks. You also have two or three drawers or a small cupboard where you can store your books, magazines, and other essentials nearby but out of sight.

Bedside shelves these are a great choice for clean and modern styles. For this type, you only have the top and the body that serves as the shelf where you can place your items.

Floating Shelves For something a little different, you can opt for floating shelves that can affixed to your wall. Great for smaller spaces, these take up no floor space, and are available in varying designs, from a standard single shelf, to including drawers or compartments for extra storage.

    4. No clutter means peace, add some extra storage to your bedroom

No matter how comfortable your bed is, if the bed or room has too much clutter, you’ll likely have trouble sleeping. A bedroom truly becomes a sanctuary only when you keep it clean and clutter-free.

If there are fewer things that get in the way like clothes, books, and other stuff that shouldn’t be on the bed (or bedroom floor), your bedroom appears more relaxing and inviting.

For managing your things, you can use ottomans and chairs with hidden storage spaces. This way, you can keep things out of the way and out of sight, but not too far away. It also means that your storage is not only functional but serves a practical purpose, giving you somewhere to sit.

Another way to keep clutter out of the way is with boxes that fit easily under the bed are also a great alternative because you can keep things you don’t need to use as often tucked away, but not too hard to get to.

If your room is spacious enough, consider adding a chest of drawers or a tallboy. Great for storing clothing, because really, whose wardrobe is big enough? They can also be an excellent way to have some of your favourite possessions on display atop.

    5. Create a comfort corner with a lounge chair

If you have the space to spare, the addition of a lounge chair or occasional chair can help transform your room from not only the place you sleep, but a place you come to relax.

Set up a reading corner with a lounge chair, a small bedside table, and a floor lamp. You can place either a low back or high back lounge chair by the window so you can make the most of natural light in the day and use the lamplight by night. This can be a great way to unwind at the end of a long day.

    6. What's a bedroom without mirrors?
